The Vienna Symphony are is Vienna's concert orchestra and as cultural ambassadors, they are and therefore responsible for the largest greatest part of local symphonic culture by far. The orchestra's activities are manifold, and the combination offusing Viennese traditional music culture with new forms of presentation taking a central role.
A further innovation is the Discussion Concert Series: "Das andere Konzert" ("A Different Concert"), where music is communicated in a witty, intelligent way. The chamber music cycle shows showcases the enormous bandwidth of musical personalities - from classical to contemporary jazz.
Also very important to them is the work with children and adolescents. The orchestra is also firmly committed to working with children and young people.
The Vienna Symphony perform gives over 160 recitals concerts and opera performances in concert halls or at opera houses per year, as well as 50 chamber music concerts and workshops per year. Since 1980, individual members of the orchestra have also organized programs, which comprise a total of four additional series each year. And let‘s not forget the orchestra‘s self-organized programs were launched containing four cycles total. Adding to that a vivid and intenseing touring schedule throughout Europe and other overseas areas.
Since 1946 the Vienna Symphony is has also been the orchestra-in-residence at the Bregenz Festival, where it performs and performing the largest part of the opera and concert productions there. Since early 2000, the orchestra has also been responsible for a considerable part of the number of productions at the "Theater an der Wien", which has once again become active as an opera house.
The in-house production company "Symphonia Tonaufnahmeges.mbH." took caretook on the task of recording of the complete recordings of the Shostakovich Symphonies under the baton of Eliahu Inbal, and of the Mozart and Beethoven piano concerti with Rudolf Buchbinder as the soloist.
The art artistic prowess of the Vienna Symphony and its large wealth of recordings was documented in the year 2000 (their centennial 100-year anniversary) in a jubilee edition CD mainly focusing on their post-war body of work.
